Laurel Charity Hospital to be first completed unit

Rev L G Gates says the Laurel Non-Sectarian Charity Hospital is assured. A plot north of Laurel on Lindsey Park road will host the new hospital grounds with a six room cottage to be converted into an Emergency Hospital during construction. The main brick three story Laurel Charity Hospital will be finished to modern scientific standards, with a Hospital Annex for the interim use.

Evans Home Destroyed by Fire on Chestnut Street

Fire Thursday at 4 p m gutted the rear room of Mr. R L Evans house on Chestnut Street. Piano and a few items saved. house and furniture valued with $2,000 insurance. B R Sumrall of East Jones, recovering from ten weeks of paralysis, visited town Wednesday.

Merchants Carnival to Draw Laurel Crowds November 3

Laurel prepares for a big Merchants Carnival with a Military Parade football game free dance brass band and many prizes. Contestants from outside Laurel must register by noon and winners receive watches shoes cash and special awards from local merchants. The event promises pleasure profit and a chance to meet old friends in Jones and adjacent counties.

Grocery Store Destroyed by Fire on Walters Avenue

A Sunday early morning blaze on Walters Avenue destroyed W. W. Musick’s grocery store and contents with $750 insurance on the stock. The fire started after the owner left at 10:30 p.m. and the roof plus rear portion burned. The Frank Gardner estate owned the building. A separate fire on Wheeler Avenue Monday morning tore through Abe Marcus’s home, with the stove pipe failing and smoke and flames trapping occupants. no items were saved though Marcus had recently remodeled and purchased new furniture.

What saved the market this week in cotton prices

The New Orleans Cotton Exchange weekly report shows 3,191,000 bales moved from farmers since September 1, 248,000 more than last year. Ginners report later indicated a 771,000 bale year‑to‑year drop, yet prices rose 3 8 to 13 13 16 cents middling. Cotton seed climbed to 27 to 27.50 a ton, adding value. Farmers hurried to market at high prices, widening the yearly profit gap to about 62 million dollars.
