Deputy Sheriff Hill reports four black prisoners in the county jail at Laurel on felony charges. John Fleming and Toy Ferguson allegedly wrecked a Gulf and Ship Island passenger train near Service in July. fd Marks is jailed for shooting a white man named McDonald at Service about two years ago, leaving McDonald with a severed leg. Granville Lindsey, claiming to be a gospel minister, is charged with shooting into a rival minister Chatman’s residence, wounding Chatman’s daughter. An old Ellisville jail cell yielded evidence of a prior attempted escape by three hanged men Will Tress Will Sye and Jake Gilmore. George McIlroy faces an attempted escape charge after alleged tools were found in a southeast jail cell.
Emmett Yates of Yates Saunders & Yates injures in buggy crash while driving J. Matt Lindsey after a property viewing near Kingston M E church. Lindsey dies, Yates bruised but recovering. The horse, from Lee's livery, has a history of danger and is known for a prior enclosure incident. The Yates party left for New Orleans for treatment.
W. J. Lightsey, Wayne County's popular assessor and farmer merchant, was in town Monday to conduct business and meet residents.

Tax books for 1909 opened October 1 in Deputy Sheriff Hill's office. The first taxpayer was M. I. Cheek, followed by his son J. O. Cheek, both from the first precinct. H. D. Sumrall, a Croftstown merchant farmer, moved to Laurel and enrolled several children in the local school, and is brother to J. A. Sumrall of Wend.
Notice states that Rev. A. W. Barry was charged with immorality and is now withdrawn and restored to all rights and privileges of pastor of Laurel circuit, Mississippi Conference. Certified by C. W. Walley, president, on October 4, 1909.

It joins a wave of fashionable homes on Fifth Sixth Seventh and Eight Avenues under construction or complete.
