Wednesday November 3 1909 Laurel enjoyed a memorable day as the Merchants Carnival drew larger crowds than expected. The event spurred interest in a repeat, with plans for improved advertising and prize offerings to ensure a bigger, better carnival next time.
Laurel High School hosts Meridian High School in a Saturday afternoon game on the vacant square between Commercial Bank and the Court House. Admission is 25 cents to cover Meridian’s travel expenses. Lineups list Warwick through Ross with substitutes Sharborough and Beard. Game starts at 3:30 p.m.
Architect Hunt of Chattanooga engaged by Main Street Methodist Church South visited Wednesday with the building committee and presented blueprints for several church designs. The church, relocating from Main Street, will be known as the First Methodist Church, to rise on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street in brick at an estimated cost of $20,000.
L T Beard commissions contractor A N Barfield to build a new home on Sixth Avenue three doors north of Seventh Street featuring a full front loggia and heated basement plant. The two story residence offers a reception hall, living and dining rooms, a kitchen, four upstairs bedrooms and a bath, with canvase and paper wall finishes and half shingle half weather boarding exterior. Barfield also remodels Mr Walter Beard’s Fifth Avenue home with a wide porch on a concrete foundation, a hallway entry, parlor, living room, dining room and kitchen, and four upper bedrooms.
Laurel Company E was ordered to provide a special military escort for President Taft during his Jackson stay. The unit joined by 56 Laurel soldiers plus 22 from Vicksburg 18 from Yazoo City and 15 from Jackson formed a double line at the depot and accompanied Taft to the Edward’s House elevator then to the Fair Grounds Agricultural Hall.
The piece urges Laurel to organize and boost the town. It champions a Chamber of Commerce or Commercial Club, calls for collective effort, publicity, and investment to attract people, businesses, and growth, and warns against doubt or “croakers.” It emphasizes transparency, unity, and active promotion of Laurel’s advantages.
President Taft exited by a door to the carriage and led a procession of dignitaries after a speech. Soldier guards kept the crowd back while Co. relieved duty at Capitol Street. Capt. Bartlett and men returned to Laurel Tuesday morning, tired but happy with the visit.
To Knights of the Macabees of Little World meet Tuesday November 9 at 8 o clock in Odd Fellows Hall. Forty three applications on hand for membership. Examined candidates and others see Dr Craft at Wallace Drug Store to be examined and be on hand Wednesday night. Rev A P Ridgeway to preach at Windham Avenue M P church next Sunday at 11 am and 7 30 pm. Mrs F K Martin and babies Freddie and Bessie returned to Slidell La after visit with her parents J C Watts.
The Laurel Bottling Works changes hands effective November 1. Incorporated in 1901, it passed to a company led by J. F. Calhoun, formerly with First National Bank as paying teller, who becomes general manager. The firm continues bottling Coca-Cola exclusive territory drinks including ginger ale and celery tonic.
Organizing Laurel business interests shown by Dr. P. H. Saunders to Travelling Passenger Agent Hale of the G and L. L. By comparing rail rates, the N O and NE charges 3 cents per mile while G and S I charges 3 1-2 cents to Jackson. The G S I rate to Jackson is reduced to 2.70 dollars.
