Weather summary and crop conditions across the state

General showers occurred early in the week with heavy rain in some areas. The middle of the week was fair with cool nights on the 17th and 18th. The weekly mean temperature was slightly above normal. Planting lags in lowlands as soil remains wet and heavy. Crops show general good stands though some corn underperforms due to wet weather. Oats harvests progress in the south while sugar cane grows late in some areas. Gardens and pastures are in good condition and tomato shipments begin in southern counties amid labor shortages.

Farm labor shortages and poor crop prospects noted

Farmers report widespread labor scarcity as spring rains and grass delay field work. Many workers command high wages while supply remains short, some cotton replanted due to grass, oats look good but fruit and watermelons show poor stands.

Soldiers Benefit Dinner For Confederates At School Grounds

Next Friday night the Daughters of the Confederacy will serve supper at the school ground for the benefit of the J. L. Power Camp Confederate Veterans. Saturday night at Odd Fellows hall the chapter will distribute Crosses of Honor to the old Soldiers, and Judge Devours will deliver the address of the evening. CS T. Larkin Tyner of Vossburg was a business visitor Thursday.

Gallwood Arrested After Diamond Heist Claim

Gallwood, alleged to have stolen $1,000 in diamonds and $150 cash from a Sumrall woman, was arrested here Wednesday by officer A. V. Clark after stepping from a North Eastern train. Police had been seeking him since information Tuesday night. he denies charges though prosecutors seek evidence for conviction. Truck shipments of beans and potatoes moved this week. Prof. Waldrup resigns as Laurel High School principal to manage the Southern Truck Growers League, thanking patrons, students, and colleagues for support and promising continued service to the community. Ben Moss Jr. visited Laurel on business Thursday.

New Baptist Minister Arrives in Laurel With Family

Rev. L G Gates and his family arrive in Laurel and settle in the Baptist parsonage. He was called by the Baptists to serve as pastor and will begin services at once. Gates came from Senatobia Mississippi.

Laurel Graded School Commencement Closes Year

After a successful year Laurel Graded School closed Tuesday with commencement at the Presbyterian church. High school graduates recited essays and a debate, and Dr W B Murrah delivered the address. Grammar school pupils also received diplomas as enrollment nears 1025 and a new $25,000 high school building is planned for next year.

Street Extension Progress in Laurel City

Considerable work is under way on Laurel streets. The Magnolia street extension toward Kingston is being graded and will become one of the citys busiest routes. Other extensions are in progress and upon completion several miles of new streets will join the corporate limits.

Pastor Resigns From Local Presbyterian Church

Rev R L Campbell, longtime pastor of the Presbyterian church here, tendered his resignation accepted last Sunday night. He leaves after telling his congregation his duty calls him elsewhere. He is beloved in Laurel and credited with two great works for the Cause. No successor has been chosen and none will likely be named for months.

Resolution on dues at Laurel Truck Growers meeting

At a Laurel Truck Growers meeting a resolution was passed to require the shipping clerk to collect 4 percent league dues on all sales F. O. B. Laurel and to collect 21/2 percent on all net returns for associational dues. It also directs that on shipments to parties not named as League representatives the same 4 percent and 2 1/2 percent be collected by shipping clerk W. J. Hurst.

Drowned at Gulfport Revered Bradford’s Son

Telegrams brought sorrow to Rev D P Bradford as his 19 year old son R Haynes Bradford reportedly drowned while bathing at Gulfport yesterday morning. The body was not recovered. he worked with the Engineer corps under J D Foster and was a strong swimmer. The family travels to Gulfport and may bring the body to Laurel for interment.
