A writ of mandamus has been granted and notice will be served this week. The Court House issue is nearing a decision, with actions expected in the courts within days.
A carload of corn fed steers from Wayne county owner Bob Arrington was shipped to New Orleans. Denham acted on the offer, purchasing the cattle at a fancy price for resale, signaling strong profit prospects in that market.
At the Eastman Gardiner and Co camp on the Laurel branch of the Gulf and Ship Island line Sunday night John Woods killed Levi Parker, both colored, with a pistol. Parker died from a left side wound. Woods fled toward town, chased by a posse, with no clue to his whereabouts.
Dr F M Rogers from Union County and his companions Misses Daisy and Blanche, with T Fitzpatrick, halted in Laurel en route to Mobile for a ten day fishing trip. The Rogers case involved a large sum stolen from an express company, later paid to him. He refused to reveal the name, was fined for contempt, the ruling stood, but Governor Vardaman pardoned him.
Me E A Canfield formerly of Clinton Iowa has located in Laurel and opened a watch and clock repair shop at The Fair in Magnolia street He plans stocking jewelry soon L J Stringer visited Laurel Friday returning from the State Teachers Association after a two week visit to relatives in Scott and Jasper counties Dr F M See of Rich ton was in Laurel this week
An oratorical contest at the Franklin Literary Society opens Monday night as the first contest. It will be a permanent feature to develop talents and foster pride and loyalty among pupils. The aim is to instill patriotism in high school work through competitive effort.
Hon E F Noel spoke in Laur el Thursday praising his candidacy for governor. He noted many good traits shared by candidates and said his platform covers leading issues and includes points some overlook.
The Masons will hold a Lodge of Sorrow Sunday at 2:30 at the residence of Mrs D G Burnett. All Masons invited and the public welcome. The ceremony honors the memory of D G Burnett amid the Laurel community’s grief.
Bud Blackwell died suddenly at his Jasper home last Sunday after a few cars were involved in a collision. A lifelong resident born in 1853 at Montrose, he leaves a widow and ten children.

Pink Patton, jailed at Ellisville on a grave charge, was released Friday on a $250 bond. Sharbrough, aided by Sullivan of Hattiesburg, secured his release through habeas corpus proceedings.

Captain J T Jones president of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Electric Company and owner of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad announced this afternoon that the Gulfport Biloxi electric line will be opened to the public on June 1. The Gulfport powerhouse will be completed early in June and work will push west toward Pass Christian once the Gulfport Biloxi link is finished.
