John Williams, a Red Line resident, is killed after a quarrel with his nephew Alex Williams who says he acted in self defense. The assault left John with a severed windpipe and jugular vein, and Alex surrendered to Officer Smiley before being taken to Ellisville.
Otto Pates died Sunday at Kingston camps near Stringer at age 45 and was buried in Hickory Grove cemetery. He came from Wisconsin, was married to the sister of A B Cox the blind man, and left a wife, one child, a Kingston Lumber Co brother, and Wisconsin siblings. Laurel residents know the Cox family’s past misfortunes and this adds to their grief.
Petty-John Stone describes W. M. Norris using home made stone in Bridges and Carnes brick and stone building. The sand and cement stone closely resembles natural stone in appearance and durability. It is touted as an attractive, economical masonry option with larger stones reducing labor.
A Laurel resident reports that Hon Henry Hilbun, after staying with relatives at Hebron, has domiciled in Laurel to establish a permanent home and pursue the practice of law. He is described as a valuable addition to Laurel’s bar and citizenship.

A Laurel feature highlights the Lindsey Wagon Company as a healthy enterprise employing over 100 workers. Four wagons shipped to Belize last week, bringing total Lindsey wagons used by Menglée Bros. Co. to ten.

B F Hall returns to Jewett Texas after visiting his brother T W Hall. The Hall family moved to Texas in the 1850s. T W Hall enlisted at the outbreak of the war and the brothers had not seen each other since. B F Hall is a prosperous farmer and stock raiser, a Baptist church deacon and a master mason.
Dan Shows died at his home Wednesday at about 60 years of age after a months long illness. He lived on a county farm, served eight years on the board of supervisors, then resided in Ellisville before moving to Laurel. He worked with Kingston Lumber Co. He leaves a wife and several siblings. burial was in Hickory Grove cemetery.
The Hugh C Card & Co a Laurel hardwood lumber factor at Kingston is expanding its mill as work on plant improvements continues. Early reports praise the quarry-sawed oak and note firm has already contracted to dispose of all output through October, signaling strong demand and promising prosperity for the growing city.
A. T. Douglas of Missouri and Miss Neal Sanders of Laurel wed at the Baptist parsonage Wednesday at 6 p m Rev Gates officiating. Douglas, a ministerial student, will enter the Baptist ministry. Sanders, long employed in Laurel schools, will join her husband in Farris Texas after a brief stay in Laurel.
Hon W J McFarland of Jasper dropped down on Wednesday. He, familiarly called Mac, looks a little lean and will likely enjoy the country.
M H Lane a pony carriage maker from Kalamazoo Michigan is visiting Laurel to scout establishing a horse ranch. He runs a Shetland pony farm in the North and says mild winters allow cheaper horse raising here. He cites South Mississippi land for forage crops and notes a Texas buyer shipping Mexican donkeys to Michigan for pony cart training.
T B Bonner returns to Laurel after visiting his son Lee in New York. A Harvard Law School graduate now with a major New York firm, he may move south to Birmingham. He attended the International Cotton Convention in Washington where talks covered bale size uniformity and field and handling waste.
Farmers report good conditions across the countryside. Four weeks of fine weather allowed extensive fieldwork and corn to be worked out. Cotton lags but rain helps it rise, oats benefit from timely showers, and another good season could finish this crop year strong.
Chancellor Woods ruled the injunction to block election returns for the proposed Jeff Davis county must be dissolved. The court confirmed the legislature’s act forming the new county and similarly dissolved the injunction against the Jones county election, allowing Laurel to have a court house.
As we go to press we learn that W L Abbott has been elected Supt of the Laurel School for another year. This is evidence of the board's support for Abbott and continuity in leadership.
