An old time picnic and barbecue will be held on the Fourth of July in the grove between Laurel and Kingston under the auspices of the Knights and Ladies of Honor. Everything on the grounds is free with no sales. Bring well filled baskets and join the community event.
The Jones County Fair Association directors met in Ellisville on Tuesday June 12 and elected W. V. Walters as president R. M. Crosby as vice president J. B. Gough as secretary H. S. Tucker as treasurer and H. G. Culpepper as general manager A committee was named for advertising and amusements Ellisville plans a big day on the fourth of July with grounds secured and arrangements underway.
Armed men broke into the Prentiss jail Monday morning and fatally shot Bud Ambrose, a Black man, after he had earlier shot a white man. An inquest jury has worked through the week to identify those responsible as angry citizens seek vengeance and Jefferson Davis County works to safeguard its name from such lawlessness.
Dr. J F Hunter Mississippi health officer states three yellow fever cases aboard the steamship Whitehall from Colon twelve days ago, with the vessel detained at Ship Island. Precautions will be taken to prevent spread in Mississippi, and coast officials have been warned. Authorities believe the situation will be safely handled.
Bob Sullivan was shot at Saratoga Saturday night by a group of unknown black men. He was taken to Hattiesburg for treatment and reported in serious condition with little hope of recovery.

Promoters expect operation within sixty days after charter grant or work to commence by then.

Dr P H Saunders of Laurel says no offer or application exists for the University of Mississippi chancellorship. He notes such a post should not be solicited and he would not know if he could accept. Friends urge presenting his name. Laurel pride and concern mix as his local role continues.
A party from Natches consisting of Mrs. J. P. Bridge, her daughter Miss J. P. Bridge, and two sons R. B. and J. P. Bridge arrived here yesterday evening. They are touring the state by automobile, having stopped at Vicksburg Jackson Columbus and Meridian before Laurel. Their next stops are Hattiesburg New Orleans and back to Natches.
Chariey Rowell, longtime Laurel barber, has bought a Biloxi shop and left Tuesday for his new field. He assumed charge Wednesday morning. The family will stay a few weeks before moving to their future home, and his Laurél success suggests similar achievement in Biloxi.

Mr. Edwin Evans of Evans Alabama and Miss Anna Tisdale of Laurel wed in a quiet ceremony at the bride's home Wednesday evening at 8 30. The couple departed that night on the 11 40 train for their new home in Alabama.
Company E and allied units from Meridian Laurel Macon and Ellisville gather in Meridian for battalion drill and dress parade to sharpen readiness for the encampment at Gulf Port from July 17 to 26. Laurel plans to invite Meridian A and D and Ellisville G for the 4th. The next drill is scheduled for Thursday night the 21st.

The text outlines creation of a police court in municipalities with seven thousand or more inhabitants, to be presided by a police justice who is elected with the mayor. The justice must be a qualified elector and attorney, with a salary set by authorities, and duties include hearing municipal ordinance violations, acting as a committing court for state criminal cases outside the corporation, and ex officio justice of the peace. In smaller towns under seven thousand, mayors and boards may elect a police justice or the mayor serves as police justice, who is ex officio justice of the peace within corporate limits.
