Jackson Miss June 5 a private letter from George Nesom former Mississippian now assistant director of agriculture in the Philippines notes seven farms under cultivation in the islands each 1000 to 2000 acres with 25 Americans and 500 natives helping to teach modern farming methods. The natives are adapting to new machinery though the steam roller self binder and thresher frightened some at first. Six crops of sorghum cane can be grown in one year. W C Welborn chief of the Philippines Bureau of Agriculture is also a former Mississippian and linked to the Starkville experiment station. Nesom and Welborn are Jones county natives. B Lawwence Moss, another Jones county native, is with the bureau in the Philippines. Burglars stole a slot machine with about 10 in nickels from Ward Taylor confectionery Tuesday night. The remains of Cornelius McDevitt, fatally injured by a Northeastern train, were carried to Paulding and interred at Catholic Cemetery Tuesday. Base Ball Club to Disband If Support Fades
Laurel played three games with Aberdeen with two wins and a 6 to 3 ten inning loss in the third. Waynesboro hosted two games with Laurel winning one. Grenada, a top state team, will visit next week, but stockholders warn the season may end if crowds do not improve. Monday is ladies day with a brass band urged to boost attendance.

Local merchants and business leaders meet at the YMCA to decide on Fourth of July festivities. A chair and secretary are chosen, a donation drive clears funds, and permanent committees for finance, program and parade, music, advertising, water events, baseball, and gun shoot are appointed. The program includes a gun club tournament, water fight, parade, military drill, arena events, and an electric street parade with a carnival ball. Laurel aims to host about 10,000 visitors and expects a lively celebration.

Elect Officers for Company I Second Mississippi Regiment
The unit met Thursday night to elect officers to replace C D Gabbs who resigned. W C O Ferrall was elected first lieutenant Fred Bantlett named second lieutenant and Sterling Flake became first sergeant. The company, 13 strong, was enthusiastic about the splendid new officers.

Confederate veteran killed by switch engine in New Orleans
Cornelius McDevitt, 67, a Confederate veteran and member of the J. L. Power Gallons erate Veterans, died after being struck near the passenger depot when a Northeasten switch engine moved cars. He crossed the tracks but fell as he climbed the depot platform and was struck by the pilot. An Irish native who moved from Jasper county years ago, he leaves a large family and many relatives in the area.

First Cotton Bloom Report From L. J. Musgrove
L. J. Musgrove of Service sent the first cotton bloom of the season to the T. B. Bonner Company with a note asking it be turned over to the Ledger. Musgrove is a prosperous farmer who has sold the first bales in Laurel for the past two seasons. S.F. Thigpen of Bay Spring News is in Laurel on business and says he has driven out blind tigers and craps shooters in his city, asserting pure mineral water leaves no excuse for booze.
