Mrs Hall heard a window warning Tuesday night and fired two shots at burglars attempting entry while Mr Wash watched from the tower. The intruders fled. Hall believes no harm was done beyond fright. Nearby burglaries raise concerns of theft in Laurel.
A large crowd from Sharon attended the protracted meeting at Union Seminary Sunday. Mrs A T Gieger was the welcome guest of Mrs Lelia Wigins Saturday afternoon. W W Gieger attended preaching at Pleasant Home Sunday. Misses Leona Ella and Loretta Sauls were in Sharon Sunday. G T Powers made a business trip to Laurel Saturday. Rush Daniels made a flying
Local residents from Huddleston attend a singing school at Myrick taught by Prof H P Blackwell of Seminary. Several Holifields visit Taylorsville and nearby relatives while others spend time with kin in Service Ellisville Soso and at Ruston summer school.
White man W H Self who cut Bob Page at Hoy last Saturday week was arrested at Johnston's saw mill this week. He is charged with assault with attempt to kill. Trial will be set for Saturday.
Reliable young man sought to fill many positions. Memphis Commercial College advertises courses in bookkeeping shorthand and telegraphy at 46 N Second St Memphis Tennessee. Graduates are in high demand with quick placement promised after completion. Ladies encouraged to pursue honest work as well.
The Mt. Vernon picnic was a success with plenty of dinner and good singing. Mr. A M Clark made a business trip to Laurel Tuesday night. Mr James Tucker and wife of Ellisville visited Mr and Mrs M W Tucker Monday and Tuesday. Mr A M Clark of Hattiesburg visited relatives here last week. John and Wert McInnis returned from Soso Thursday after handling important business.
Miss Ruth Chapman enjoyed being back in town for music class. Willie Flanagin from Bay Springs visited friends this week. C. W. Jenkins made a business trip to Ellisville. A crowd spent Thursday afternoon at the pond with boating and cheerful singing. The Gitano Debating Society met Friday afternoon to discuss a lively subject.
William Dogget and wife of Sandersville dined with W. D. Smith in Laurel day, Rev J W Norris and T J Stevens also dined with Smith. J D Holifield attended a meeting near Ellisville Sunday. G W Chancellor and wife visited Laurel Monday. Neat Pearson L Pearson and wife traded there Tuesday. Rumor talks of a saw mill at Dry Swamp soon. L Stainton of Laurel and father in law Mr Salter visited Dry Swamp Friday the 20th.
Last Sunday evening Will Jones and John Herndron, both colored, quarreled and fought. Jones was seriously wounded with gashes across the left shoulder, chest, and abdomen and is not expected to survive. Herndron is held without bail awaiting Jones' condition.
The city of Laurel Mississippi adopts an ordinance restricting railroad whistle blowing within city limits. Violators face fines up to 100 dollars or up to thirty days in jail, or both. The measure takes effect thirty days after passage dated July 17 1796 with city officials F P Emperers and Andrew Flanagan signs.
Prof E J Miler authorizes word that he will teach a mathematical class at Mt Rose in this county and will hold his examination on Thursday and Friday August 2nd and 3rd. All schools teachers citizens Supt of public instruction and the County Normal are invited to attend the examinations.
The election will be held July 30 to fill the district attorney office for the new 13th district. Citizens are urged to vote for Barney Eaton.
In Pinnellville, Marvin Gieger and Rob Poncel of Collins visited friends. Miss Jennie Moss attended a protracted meeting Saturday and Sunday. Henry Hilbun of Laurel visited home folks this week. Mr. and Mrs. D Hilbun of Collins visited Pinnellville relatives last week.
Will Freeman was a business visitor to Hattiesburg Tuesday. Mrs. Alonzo Hammett is suffering from an attack of chills this week. Miss Lola Smith of Laurel is visiting relatives here this week. Attorney Thornton was up on business Tuesday. Miss Hattie McDaniel returned Saturday from Columbus where she has attended the Normal for the past four weeks. Mrs. Edd McDaniel is the pace of her sister Mrs. Reon of Oktunna this week.
The No. 6 N. O. & N. E. passenger train, due at Laurel at 11 30, reached Ellisville at 5 after wrecking two miles south. The rear car derailed but stopped before track damage. It is the fifth or sixth Northeastern wreck in a month, mostly south of Laurel, with No. 6 repeatedly involved.
Local note highlights Ward and Taylor's new setup on Hunt and Oden. Mentions Prof W C Rogers visiting from Bay Springs en route from Plattsburg. Also details a gay outing chaperoned by Mr and Mrs Warner Beard and a regionwide hail impact on cotton near Laurel.
A Laurel city hall meeting formed an executive committee with ward and town members and voted against a census to redraw mayor and police justice offices. It urged voters to back Hon. B. E. Eaton on July 30. The first municipal primary is August 7, 1906, with nominees to be printed after August 6. Candidates announced include E. S. Waite Jr for Ward 4, Dr N. B. Smith for Ward 2, and T. M. Travis for Ward 1.
