Additionally Miss Lula Smith, aged twenty, died at Kingston after six weeks with fever. burial plans set for Sandersville.
Meridian council minutes reveal Mayor Parker, a Bonita Brick stockholder, defended a $55 brick purchase. He said future sales would stop, citing investigations into city contracts and implying broader legal concerns about municipal procurement.
Deputies Hill and Boutwell conducted several raids this week. Anzie Smiths place yielded 60 quarts of beer and whiskey, Maggie Trotter paid $50 in Justice Jefcoat's court for selling liquor, Lula Johnston was fined $20 for allowing illegal beverages, and six casks of liquor were seized Tuesday night. A traveling agent pleaded guilty and drew a $50 fine, with light beer and four whiskeys found for his agency.
