G W Cowley left Morrillton Arkansas on July 9 to establish a 160 acre land grant awarded to his grandfather Charles Cowley for War of 1812 service. The grant, signed by James Monroe on February 10 1823, is absolute in authority. Despite 26 transfers and occupancy, Cowley is assured no trouble in securing his claim.
A large Sharon crowd attended the protracted meeting at Shady Grove Sunday. Mrs. T. J. Carlisle is ill this week and hoped for a speedy recovery. Mrs. Lelia Wiggins and Niola shopped in Laurel Saturday. Mrs. J. E. was welcomed by Mrs. J. A. Gieger Sunday. Misses Mary and Laura Sims attended preaching at County Line Sunday. Chester Lowe bought beef cattle in the community Monday.
West Laurel residents attended a Saturday picnic at Clear Water and the protracted meeting at Big Creek on Sunday. Wheeler and McGowan mill at Flynt Crossing is reported to be doing good business.
Miss Amice Brown visited home folks at Enterprise. Mrs. D. R. Sanders returned from a visit to Hei delberg area. Mr. Lester Overstreet of Esta butchie visits friend John Parker. Mesdames Ramsey and Perkins shopped in Laurel. Mrs. Will Freeman hosts Mesdames Bailey and Brone of Laurel. All local patients are reported convalescent.
Rain continues to fall as residents look forward to clearer days. Miss Ruth Chapman of Newton visits her brother Dr J H Chapman, who has also hosted another sibling. Dr A S Chapman and Miss Wallie Coats attended a protracted meeting at County Line Sunday. Mr Allen Braswell is ill with fever. Gitano school remains in progress with reports of ongoing activities.
The Laurel cotton mill extension 75 by 160 feet and two new warehouses are nearly finished and tested. Mammoth furnaces and boilers are installed. machinery arrived and installation begun. Ready for full operation by September 1, the plant will cost about 350000 dollars and employ 500 workers. Output: 200000 yards weekly, 9100 bales annual, consuming virtually all county cotton.
In a dated letter from New York, F. W. Devoe & Co. extols Devoe paint as sweeter and longer lasting than rivals, arguing labor and paint savings justify higher upfront costs. The missive invites exclusive local sale in Laurel Mississippi, appealing to a retailer’s profit from volume and longevity.
Returns on several cars of potatoes have been received by W. J. Hurst. Those interested can call on E. D. Hurst for settlement.

Mrs A M Clark of Hattiesburg visited relatives Tuesday. Miss Stella Ernest has gone to New York for a primary work course. The Magnolia Pressing Club advertises seam pressing. Jim notes: a washout on the M J & K C near Beaumont, engineer stopped just in time. School and civic notes include Dr Gunter’s prospecting visit, En Campment events, and local business moves.
On Saturday evening W H Self a white man cut Bob Page a Black man on the shoulder. Eye witnesses say Self was drinking and attacked without cause. The injury was painful but not serious.
The first week of Normal has passed with strong attendance and satisfaction. About thirty to forty enrolled, and officials and townspeople anticipate growth. The event offers rare instruction and enthusiasm for Jones and neighboring counties, aiming to ready teachers for leadership and up-to-date practice.

John Sharp Williams departed on Saturday July 14 for London. Before leaving he predicted Roosevelt would be nominated for the presidency, but favored William Jennings Bryan for the role. Commercial Bank and Trust Company purchased $40,000 of Jeff Davis county bonds at 5 percent interest over 20 years. The bank’s growing prominence among financial institutions is noted. The Ledger also announces Dr. W. P. Davis as a candidate for alderman from Ward 3.
A Citizen letter reports that a bridge on Boguehoma near Cleo collapsed about six feet after a heavy spring rain. The structure is now unsafe, promises of repair have failed, and local road workers push for quicker aid to reconstruct the bridge.
