Laurel Compress Company Reorganized with New Directors
A meeting of the Laurel Compress Company resulted in a reorganization. J. P. Myer of Ellisville became majority stockholder and, with Mose Gerson Taylorsville and J. G. Daly, joined as directors. Frank Gardner was elected president and W. F. Rumble secretary. The Ellisville plant burned last year, and the new management is expected to boost sales and press an estimated ten to fifteen thousand more bales locally.

Fights Break Out Amid Samstown Barroom Brawls
A flurry of weekend altercations left several men bruised after tavern incidents. W. D. Turner fought Alonzo Creel in a Tuesday pool hall clash, while George Knight, an innocent bystander, suffered a deep facial wound from a 22 calcium cue. Chester Jones and another man fought Monday at the Star Restau rant, shattering soda glasses. Rowden, a waiter at the Rowden restaurant, was struck with a hatchet on Wednesday, suffering a severe skull wound before fleeing and later being arrested and fined.

Two Men Die in Jasper County Tragedy
In Newton Mississippi on July 13 two prominent farmers Shack Ethridge and Andrew Davis died in a fatal duel sparked by a family feud. A pistol and shotgun were fired after a gate confrontation, leaving Ethridge dead at the scene and Davis dying at his home. Both men were married with children. Davis’s wife was ill. They were brothers-in-law.
