Fourth of July Celebrations Planned in Laurel

Laurel schedules grand fourth of July events with a city parade route from Y M C A up Front Oak Main Summit Ave High Forest Rumble School High Commercial back to start. A night parade runs 7 30 p m with illuminated floats. Gulf Ship Island offers special round trip fares to nearby towns with trains from Saratoga and Mt Olive arriving around nine. Tickets valid next day for overnight stay in Laurel.

Bank holiday closure announced for July 4th

Paulding Outrage Strikes Prominent Couple in Bed

A Star special from Paulding Jasper County reports that Hon. C. W. Thigpen and his wife were attacked in their bed Sunday night. The assailants beat the couple, with the husband rising from a blow to pursue a weapon as intruders fled through an open window. Police and neighbors launched a search at once.

A large posse pursued fugitives after a brutal act with no motive or clew yet. Mr. Thigpen, a prominent Jasper County figure, was noted but no further identity details emerged.

W H Cook Announces For State Senate Seat

The Ledger announces W H Cook of Hattiesburg as a candidate for the State Senate from the counties of Jones Perry Wayne and Greene to succeed the deceased J T Parks. He is a 31 year old attorney with the firm Hardy and Cook, new to politics but a noted fighter and speaker. He is district deputy of the Knights of Pythias for the district and is described as having ample qualifications for the office.

Laurel Lodge No. 134 Knights of Pythias elected officers for the ensuing term. Officers include H C Neely as C C, C S Williams as V C, J M Fellows as P, J M Bradley as M of W, Geo M Nennis as M A, J W Kelhe as I G, John Tach as O G. The lodge is in prosperous condition with new members joining regularly. J P and C S Myer of Inllis ville visited Laurel on business.

Is It Boll Weevil Invasion Hits Local Cotton

M B Valentine, a prominent farmer from the Myrick neighborhood, reports an insect damaging cotton in Laurel. Specimens brought by Wm Strickland show six acres nearly ruined, with bolls attacked on a foot tall stalk. Archie Valentine and M B Valentine also report serious damage as experts analyze the samples.

Order of Elks Promising Lodge to Organize in Laurel

The Brotherhood of the Protected Order of Elks plans a strong Laurel lodge with a charter list of forty sent to the grand lodge for approval. A committee including R. E. Hassell L Weitzel B W Sharborough C R Shannon and Harry Shoemaker will arrange a hall and entertainment for visiting Elks from Jackson Meridian Mobile New Orleans Gulfport Hattiesburg and others for the installation. A banquet will follow the initiatory ceremonies.
