Last Saturday teachers finally received part of their pay after a lengthy delay that caused embarrassment to the school district. Officials cited administrative hiccups and promised full settlement soon, with some staff noting the impact on household budgeting and morale.
Jones county teachers face hardship as the board rejects the extra levy from the regular school fund for months one through four. Supt Waldrup seeks plans to tide teachers over into the fifth and sixth month special levy while hoping state shortages ease the gap. Teachers threaten protest if losses persist, noting broader statewide funding strains.
The Protestant Preachers Association met with Rev L G Gates Rev T E Waldrup Rev R R Jones and Rev L W Rose and Waldo W Moore present. Gates urged recreation under church care and a community hospital. Jones reports 327 in Sabbath school. Waldrup notes large new Kingston Fifth Avenue churches. Y M C A dinner praised by Mr Bowron of Birmingham.
District Attorney B E Eaton announces that Judge Bullard has called a special term of court to convene in Laurel on the second Monday in March. The session will run for thirty days or until the docket is cleared.
The Donald Bros. start work at their stave factory in north Laurel for white oak stave production. The plant adds local employment and purchases oak timber, split and delivered to a yard north of the brick yard between the N. O. & N. E. and the M. J. & K. C. railroads.
A Partridge Plains writer thanks Sandersville and Service correspondents and hints at future adventures. Hal Jones wed Miranda Singleton, widow’s daughter, in a Sunday ceremony. A baby girl born January 19 brightened Mr. Will Treat’s home. Mrs. Thornton visited daughter Mrs. Sanders last week.
G W Lowe of Soso sold cotton here Tuesday at 9 55 regreting not getting 10 cents, saying the regret came from how easy it was to count.
A new financial institution will be housed in the T. B. Bonner Building after a local decision. The move places the bank within the historic structure, consolidating operations under one roof and signaling a stable downtown presence for the community.
The Farmers and Traders Bank will move into new quarters carved from the T. B. Bonner building. Plans place the bank in the northeast corner occupying one-fourth of the floor space. The space will be divided into two distinct buildings with solid interior walls and exterior work. Tate Company handles the construction and the space will be leased for banking purposes for five years.
A Laurel Second Baptist church Missionary Society notes the passing of Sister Harriett Martin, beloved member and friend. The group expresses sympathy to her family, dedicates a minute page to her memory, and requests publication in the Baptist Record and Laurel Ledger, with a copy to the family.
Sharon notes farm work advances quickly in the area. Mrs. J. A. Moss is ill this week. Rev. J. L. Nesom traveled to Sandoraville Monday. Leona Hutto Biddie Jones and Denson Hosey visited Sharon Sunday. L. B. Pharis returned from Myrick Sunday. Prayer meeting at H. Sims' Saturday night drew attendees. Teachers easing blues as pay begins. E. Y. Welborn made a business trip to town Monday. Miss Callie Riley visited home folks Sunday.

Chancellor Sam Whitman is disqualified from the injunction suit over the Jasper County agricultural school. T. H. Oden is appointed Special Chancellor to hear the case today at Bay Springs. The matter raises major educational issues and constitutional questions that may reach the U S Supreme Court.
The Y M C A hosts a talk by James Bowron of Birmingham praised as scholarly with three ministers present. Next Sunday Rev. K H Rasmanjami formerly of Constantinople and now in Atlanta will speak on The Present Against the Cross. A highlight will be multilingual songs and traditional instruments. Dr Basmanjam, a Baptist minister, will be present, and the time is 2 30 pm. All men and boys urged to attend, especially workers.
The county F. E. and C. U. met in Ellisville last Wednesday and Thursday with J. H. Bush as president. A strong turnout backed by 82,000 in subscriptions backed warehouse funds and plans to buy wholesale, store, and distribute. Orange Herrington to continue as Local Guide editor, praised for ability and experience.
Colds and la grippe have been frequent visitors in the past week as farmers turn the sod. J W Hines completed a quarter mile of wire fence on his farm. The Bush home party Friday night was well attended and enjoyable. Alonzo Musgrove drew attention as center of attraction. Local youths attended preaching at Indian Springs Sunday. Ham Valentine of Laurel was a welcome visitor last week and is noted as an excellent fiddler. The stork visited A C Holloway’s home last week, bringing a fine boy.
W. B. Donald of Shubuta is relocating to Laurel this week and will establish his home here. He is a stave firm member and adds value to the local business circle.
Mrs. B. F. Hosey and sister Ida Hardy with niece Grace Wells visited the Hosey home over the weekend. Miss Sue Hosey spent a few days in Stringer. J. H. Wells and family visited relatives here. Bob Land bought Craven's store and plans new furnishings. Miss Mabel Williams of Basic Miss. visits sister Mrs. Grace. Dewitt Moss trip to Moselle. O. F. Moss attended the teachers association at Louin.
Supt Watkins has secured Henry Hammond's In the Shadow of the Cross for a three day exhibit in the school auditorium starting Monday Feb 1. Doors open 3 to 5 pm and 7 to 10 pm. The luminous darkroom phenomenon and visible cross above the Savior draw interest from artists and scientists alike.
L. B. Wade of Vossburg visited Laurel en route to Bay Springs to settle his father L. P. Wade and sister Susan Wade’s estate. He disputed LepGer's report of his sister's cause of death, saying she died from a complication of ailments worsened by refusing medical treatment.
