Edwin McClure, playing a game in the High School during recess Friday morning January 27, fell and badly sprained his left arm. He is reported to be recovering well and returned to school Tuesday. Attendance at Irwin Russell School declined after rain caused about forty absences in a pupil count of eighty.
The Franklin Literary Society held a regular meeting with debates on whether idleness should be forbidden by law and state job provision. Recitations and readings followed, with an address by Prof. Waldrup and several student compositions on topics from ideal life to manners. Advisory Chair pleased with work. N W Collins, successful Jones county farmer, plans farming articles noting twenty years of earnings and land ownership, as a widower with diverse local interests.
A Laurel weeklong dog scare leads to an ordinance requiring owners to keep dogs on premises or muzzled for sixty days under threat of penalties. Police are authorized to shoot any unmuzzled dogs on streets. A dog’s head was sent to Pasteur Institute in New Orleans for rabies testing, with treated bite victims to follow if needed.

Messrs Jackson and Lequin are hustling with a new saw mill. There has been sickness in the vicinity this week. St Reeves and J O Freeman attended the Bethlehem board meeting last Saturday. Farmers plan another crop, planting more corn and peas and less cotton. Hosey has not been represented recently. The Ledger has been welcome since its first issue. The three month old babe of Mr and Mrs J S Johnson died Friday about 3 pm. burial postponed until Monday due to bad weather.
A severe spell of dry weather in Dry Swamp has damaged timber and severely harmed livestock. Roads have become impassable and farm operations hindered as the county grapples with losses to crops and infrastructure.
The passage notes blockades hindering travel while Mrs. L C Smith recovers from illness. Visitors include Mr Wilse Hawkins of Sandersville, Mrs W C Smith lame from a nail injury, and many local households sharing Sunday and weekly visits. Names include Gough family, Kittrell of Lauderdale, Mrs N L Pearson of Myrick, EE Jenkins, Morgan Geddie, J A Blackledge, C D Valentine.
Heavy rains bring the blues to East Laurel as residents cope with wet weather departures. Ernest Dyess returned from work with a road machine after visiting home Saturday night. Joe Beck of near Waynesboro sought opportunities in the area last week. J N Coker medical concerns rise as a bone felon may force amputation. A G Leggett continues improving land clearing. Cold spell keeps some students home this week. O B Loper visits Laurel while tending a sick sister. Marvin Robinson visits Ellisville on business. A large crowd attended last week’s town show and enjoyed it. C M Edwards of Richton visited the school Monday. Miss Mary Hull spent days with friends in Laurel.
Cotton closed yesterday evening in New Orleans at 79-16, down 1-16 from the day before. Officials expect a rise if farm meetings nationwide today rally support to hold part of the crop and reduce acreage and fertilizer use. Ben Windham spent several days in Ellisville this week.
The Y M C A Woman's Auxiliary holds its February meeting in the Gymnasium Hall Monday at 4 p.m. The annual officer election and other business will be discussed. Mrs P S Cocke and Mrs J C Pleasants will present selections. Refreshments by Mesdames Burdick Justice Mc Carty and Lovell follow. The group cites a landmark year. Illustrated London News added to Association Reading Room. A men's discussion on lying justifiable to follow at 4 o'clock.
A week of extreme cold rain followed by heavy rainfall devastated the South. Farm stock suffered, forests were damaged, lines failed, and railroads washed out. Wires, poles, bridges and roads were destroyed, delaying trains and mail. Businesses operated little, carpenters idle, and industries handicapped with losses running into thousands.
