The Jones County Court House bond proposal totals 2500 dollars for furnishing two courthouses. Laurel’s building was not accepted due to minor unfinished touches. Bids to furnish both houses have been ordered and taxpayers will be notified that an additional 25000 dollar bond will be issued for seating and furnishing the two courthouses.
The Methodist Episcopal Conference at Yazoo City adjourned Monday. Appointments for territory include T. J. O'Neil presiding elder Newton district T. W. Adams Main St Laurel W. W. Miss Sallie Buchanan visited homefolks Saturday and Sunday. Mr. S. A. Myrick was stricken with paralysis Sunday. His condition is still serious. Miss Bessie Knight of Laurel visited Miss Bamer Rogers Sunday. Mrs. A. H. Sullivan of Ellsville visited her sister, Mrs. Burton, Saturday. Prof Gambrel of the Taylor School was here Saturday. Those ill from ptomaine poisoning from oysters have mostly recovered. Hill Rowell and wife of Laurel visit J. D. Rowell’s family. Dan Trest, bookkeeper at Williams and Freeman’s, spent Sunday with his parents. Mrs. W. W. Patrick spent last week in Hattiesburg. School enrollment rises as “Age cannot wither nor custom state” echoes from the Sandersville Loafer’s Club. Many attend shows in Laurel this week. Rev Brig preached two sermons here Sunday. An enthusiastic bank meeting will be held here Monday night. The body of education week notes surplus school fund remarks by Mr Moss. T M Pilgrim died at his home after a lingering illness aged 36. The W O W buried him at Pilgrim's Rest four miles southwest of town at ten o'clock Wednesday. He was a member of the M I church and leaves a wife five children and many relatives and friends.
Laurel announces stock subscription for a new bank with most shares taken by small holders, mainly farmers, and notes minor plan adjustments. Also promotes Our Own brand coffee, Laurel Grocery Christmas candies, and Mississippi Drug Co with free firecrackers on each dollar purchase at Hopper's It.
St Johns Episcopal Church schedules include morning prayer with sermon at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. services on the fourth Sunday of Advent, 10 a.m. Sunday school led by superintendent Phillip Gardiner, and Christmas day Holy Communion at 7:30 a.m. followed by morning prayer at 11 a.m. Music praised, cordial welcome extended. Fresh candies noted for sale at Star confectionery. Justice W E Hodges of Beat 2 observed between trains Monday morning.
G W Denham died Saturday at sixty three after a six month wasting illness from dropsy. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church where he belonged and his body laid to rest in Hickory Grove cemetery. He leaves six children, five sons and one daughter, and many friends mourn his loss. He came to Laurel twenty one years ago and helped shape the town's growth near the Y M C A site.
City election officials nearly erred by leaving ballots and tally sheets in City Hall for days after results were declared. The records were found and promptly sent to the secretary of state in Jackson within the ten day commission window, preventing a potential embarrassment for the incoming administration.
The W.I. Swain Co. have been in Laurel this week for a second trip and the show’s public reception is upbeat. Attendees report well attended, clean attractions and reliable management. Mr Swain is described as genial and respected by the public.
Moss and Miss Mamie Nicholson visited brother W I E Nicholson. Mr and Mrs Calbert Nesom visited relatives in Mogsville. Miss Biddie Jones now teaching at New Home visited Miss Lizzie Windham. Capt B I Moss made a business trip to Bay Springs. J W Robbins was away several days for business. Mrs J J Cross of Laurel visited her parents J C and Mrs Windham.
W M Coats returns to old place with Dunagin Whiter Co and Pearson offers fruit at Star Confectionery. W J Hurst leaves T B Bonner Co as clerk January 1 to move to his farm north of town. Laurel Grocery promotes Richelieu candy, fresh nuts and fruits, coffee ground at an electric mill, and Fritter Corn. J W Tolbert returns to Foote Patrick Co. after six months. E E Graham of Vernon son of S G Graham injures wife near Eatonville Perry county.
