City council approved a new fire limits ordinance regulating construction and flues within fire districts. The measure governs building methods to reduce fire risk and sets compliance expectations for property owners and contractors.
Assistant Chief Benison is appointed to fill the vacancy. The Board adopts a fire limits ordinance requiring permits for building within fire limits to prevent conflicts. The ordinance does not require permits outside fire limits, prompting concern about unsafe construction in residential districts. Flues and chimneys are regulated within fire limits. Bartlett tendered his resignation and it was accepted. Assistant Chief Benison was appointed to fill the vacancy. An ordinance regulating doors and exits in public buildings was introduced and referred to the building committee. Petitions for arc lights on 15th avenue and at 8th street and 7th avenue were referred to the committee. A petition to extend the curb line on the west side of 6th avenue was granted.
Mr. P. D. Mapp of two miles from Laurel submitted a sample of syrup made from blue ribbon cane grown on a quarter acre. Fertilizers were cotton seed meat and acid phosphate. The quarter acre yielded 92 gallons, with last year’s per acre output higher. Samples sent to Starkville experiment station led to orders in New Orleans and Memphis.
The Laurel National Guard rifle range contract is awarded to Mr. A. McKenzie by Capt. Quintrelly for the State and United States. Completion is due by January 15, 1910, weather permitting, with grading, excavation, and rifle pit construction. The State provides targets and ammunition, and troops from Laurel to Meridian and Hattiesburg may practice there in shifts using moving targets.
Street Commissioner Cook reports eighteen street workers spent four days last week cleaning Hickory Grove cemetery. Two additional days of work were required this week to finish the job.
Laurel Lodge No. 1000 observed its annual Lodge of Sorrow in December paying tribute to members Frank Gardner Isogene Bonner and W Calvin Smith. The ceremony featured remarks by Herbert Lampe and Rev L W Rose, with services at the Odd Fellows hall and a guitar of performances. The lodge marked its fourth anniversary in October with 140 members in good standing and a flourishing condition.
M A Brown state lecturer of the Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union of America will address union members and the public Wednesday December 15 at Hickory Grove. All union men urged to attend and others invited. Laurel Oil and Fertilizer Co promotes its mixed meat and phosphate product.
Next Sunday the Y M C A schedules two talks for men with Rev Holcomb at 2 30 and Rev McComb at 3 30 on the street before the post office. Afterward the male gathering will march to the Baptist church singing old time songs. Men are urged to pray for these services. The item mentions the Red and White contest beginning in December.
On the fifteenth, for thirty days Capt. Frank Calhoun and Capt. Fred Bartlett train their crews. Merchants watch windows as twenty prizes are offered. The board splits over Reds and whites. Ledger backs Capt. Bartlett and Reds. Boys plan a heated timer and big supper awaits winners while losers get water and toothpicks at opposite tables.
Rev T W Adams presents the finest annual report to the conference as the Main Street Methodist Church closes its best year. All claims paid, Woman’s Home and Foreign Missionary Societies grow, Sunday School reorganized, League membership triples under Prof C L Neill and Mrs T A Toler, 206 new members added, gifts given to Mr Adams, Dr Clayton visits on Saturday.
Four deeds filed in the Chancery Court relate to the sale and reorganization of the M J K C now New Orleans Mobile and Chicago Railroad Co. John A Laing of New York came to Laurel to file papers, detailing dissolution of a long-standing railroad alliance and signaling potential direct links to the Western Metropolis.
