Judge Robert F Cochran opens a sweeping Jasper County grand jury probe aimed at curb ing bootlegging and crime. Indictments near a hundred expected as perjury risks rise, fines mount and violators flee to escape the county farm.
Several hundred votes have been cast for the most popular young lady in the city as Queen of the street fair. A handsome diamond ring valued at 75 dollars will be presented to the winner. Listed are the young ladies voted on for queen.
Mr L L Glass, a few miles east of Laurel, displays rice yielding about 75 bushels per acre between corn rows that yield 50 bushels per acre. He says rice is the finest stock food. William Harper of Service exhibits three large turnips and a sugar cane stalk. Mr Harper is a prosperous farmer and truck grower. W Ducksworth of Soso adds half a bushel of fine turnips season. If we were housekeeping in town, we would have plenty to run us this winter.
Society notes report visits and dinners in Richton and Meridian. Guests included Mrs. S R Cook, Sam Floyd Jr, Misses Kahn and Fewell, with a German club gathering at the Tullahoma Club hosted by Mr. and Mrs. P St Geo Cocke. Other locals and visitors are listed among social events and autumn travels.
The Queen and Crescent, N O and N E R R A and V R R and V B and P R R announce reduced round trip fares to Texas, Indian Territory, Oklahoma, and Mexico. Tickets valid twenty one days from sale with stopovers both ways. Dates of sale December 21 through December 25.
The Presbyterian Church announces Sunday School at 10 a.m. and preaching at 11 a.m. Deacon installations will include E. D. Pearce, John Lindsey, H. B. Justice, and J. A. Trest. A sermon will be given by the Pastor. Y.P.S.C.E. meets at 7:45 p.m. Night service at 6:30 p.m. Mid-week prayer is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. All are invited, especially traveling men and strangers. The church announces morning and evening services and notes only two Sundays remain until conference. Sunday School meets at 10 a.m. with Dr. R W Jones as superintendent. This is missionary Sunday. foreign mission dues are paid, but 540 remains for domestic missions. One donor will cover half if the school pays the other half next Sunday. D P Bradford.
The Y M C A calls boys under 18 to a Saturday afternoon 3 PM gym session to organize physical classes. Men over 18 including business clerks are asked to join Monday 8 15 PM for night classes. The remodeled building now hosts a larger downstairs gym. J A Ray and W Irwin Thornton Henry Kelley mention Thanksgiving at Montrose.
Last Sunday many churches in the city were crowded and Sunday schools grew by about fifty percent due to recent revivals. Main Street Methodist recorded 67 accessions, Presbyterian 24, First Baptist 23, with others joining various missionary churches. Rev. D. P. Bradford estimates total conversions at around three hundred. The piece also notes local improvements in electric lighting and mentions Mr. A. J. Brown as the new superintendent, plus several local residents and business notices.
