The Board of Supervisors completed a revision of the assessment roll after three weeks of labor showing a decrease of 32859 from last year. Personal values fell from 1847542 to 1719957 while realty rose from 5252808 to 2623434. The overall drop stems from the personal roll decline.
Dr M D Ethridge outlines malaria causes and prevention for the South, noting Anopheles Claviger is the sole cause, and detailing how to screen doors and windows, drain standing water, and use kerosene to destroy mosquito breeding, with emphasis on large quinine doses for attacks and year round screening for safety.

G I Nesom chief of the Bureau of Agriculture in the Philippine Islands is at home on a three month vacation. He spends part of his break visiting relatives in this county and his sister Mrs B F Beale in Laurel. Nesom has led the department in the Philippines for about three years succeeding W C Welborn, another Jones county native. He plans to return in November after touring the west and northwest to further his work.
Evelyn Lee Fendley died August 23 1909 from typhoid fever after a 54 day illness. She was buried November 28 1907 at Hickory Grove cemetery. The funeral from the family home was led by Rev T E Waldrup with many relatives and friends in attendance.
The article reports severe losses across crops due to extreme heat with temperatures above 100 degrees. Cotton fruitage drops by about thirty percent as large bolls fall from the weed with no clear cause, while peas cane and truckers also suffer significant losses.
Mr W W Richie familiarly known as Uncle Jack died at his East Side home Saturday night after long illness. He was 76 and longtime Laurel resident. His body was taken to Lourn Sunday for interment. A wife, many friends and Confederate veterans mourn a devoted husband and comrade.
The first bale of cotton received on the Laurel market was shipped in by P. Todd of Soso last Saturday. It sold to the Commercial Bank and Trust Co. for 14 cents. Last year’s first bale arrived on the 10th, eleven days earlier than this year.
The Sunday School Superintendents' Institute, under the North Mississippi Sunday School Board and the Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Church South, will be held in Meridian, Mississippi, starting Wednesday night September 22 and ending Friday noon September 24. Dr and Mrs H M Hamill of Nashville Tennessee will oversee the institute, promising a high order program.
Monteagle Training School and E N French of the M E Church South join a program with Rev W Fred Long of the Mississippi School Association. Leaders from two Mississippi Methodist Conferences attend. 100 delegates by rail may secure reduced rates. send names to Robert F Ormond in Meridian for free entertainment.

A brief note from Travis & Abney advises managing furniture purchases and liberalizing the home to improve family life. Mrs J H Crawford visited her sister Mrs Sugg in Summerland, returning Tuesday.
Superintendent Watkins resumes duties at his desk as schools reopen on September 20, with administrative staff confirming start of term and reestablished routines across district campuses.
Supt. R. H. Watkins returns to duties after summer in Prince Edward County Virginia and focuses on finishing touches and furnishings for the new city school building. Set to open September 20, the structure is praised as the state’s finest for design and convenience with ample lighting, self contained facilities, and safe egress to prevent crowding and fire hazards. Laurel residents express pride in the building’s completion and potential.
