Laurel Sash and Box Factory Adds Local Industry

The Laurel sash and box shop under A. B. Campbell now produces work formerly sent out of town. The plant displayed 19 foot fluted columns of 10 and 14 inch diameter, with perfect glueing and veneering. Campbell also handles turned columns, screen work, furniture making, cleaning and revarnishing, inviting local inquiry.

Hotel Changes Hands at Magnolia Hotel

F. S. Becker, formerly proprietor of the Laurel and then the Becker Hotel, has taken charge of the Magnolia hotel. He plans to run it with his usual high standard, offering meals even for those who do not keep house, and notes he has few rooms so none will be available.

Burglary at Moss Mercantile Company Store

Burglars entered the Moss Mercantile Company store in Moss on Saturday night through the back door and stole merchandise valued at 150 dollars. They rifled through most of the stock, broke open the cash drawer without taking anything, and stole a breech-loading shotgun and several new suits. A liberal reward is offered for the capture of the suspects.

Phillips Dies After Long Illness in City

J. A. Phillips, 38, died Wednesday after seventy days of typhoid fever. A Congregational Methodist Church member, he leaves a wife and six children. Funeral rites were held Thursday at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

Farm institutes in county canceled due to quarantine

No Farmers Institutes. The farmers institutes which were to be held in this county this week have been called off on account of quarantine restric tions.

Marine hospital surgeons report the yellow fever situation improving with successful mosquito control. Daily cases and deaths in the current period lag 1878 after a prior surge, while a Sunday fumigation day and public cooperation aim to wipe out foci in American quarters though French and Italian areas pose ongoing challenges. Archbishop Chapelle's fever linked to servant carelessness, not bites. Arsenical theory rejected by health authorities. New cases 62, deaths 8 today. total 1282 cases, 188 deaths to date. Mississippi City reports twelve cases with five convalescent. no other fever in the state.

Game Law Boosts Quail Numbers in County

The recent county game law, approved earlier this year by the board of supervisors, is credited with swelling the number of young game birds, especially quail, as woodsmen report an unprecedented abundance of young partridges. The act imposes heavy penalties for nest disturbance and remains in force for three years unless likely repealed. M. B. Valentine, a known Myrick resident, was a business visitor Wednesday.

Rain Causes Complaint Among Farmers

The past ten days of confined rains have sparked widespread farmer complaints. Cotton stagnation continues, corn fields show poor growth, and cane and potatoes suffer from excess moisture across several areas.

A Model Farm Near Laurel A Model Pinewoods Farm

G W Knight owns a four mile northeast of Laurel model pinewoods farm on the Ellisville and Sandersville road. The 240 acre property includes 65 acres cultivated this year in corn with some fields yielding up to 50 bushels per acre and potential 40 to 50 bales of cotton. Last year the two mule crop produced 35 bales of cotton. The land supports clovers grasses fruit and truck crops. The place has a residence three tenant houses a good barn and a dug well with ample water. Knight could pursue livestock if desired and still make a comfortable living and savings.

First bale of new cotton sold near Laurel

E B Josey sold the first bale of new cotton on Wednesday. Weighed 485 pounds ginned by Laurel Oil and Fertilizer Company sold to J P Myer for 15 cents a pound. It was shipped to Hyman Hiller in New Orleans. G W Knight held 35 bales from last season and sold to J P Myer for 10 cents totaling 1797.70. Miles Sims and Mr. Knight among county's largest last year holders. R C Huston civil engineer visiting Chicago.
