Fire Sunday evening at Gardiner and Co s dry kiln No 1 in Eastman caused by a blaze that burned for about two hours. Several cars were removed from the kiln and saved but the top suffered heavy damage. Total loss estimated at 1400 dollars. Firemen were praised for saving much of the structure and contents.
At Hebron in Jones County a six week normal for teachers runs with Supt. Taylor and faculty including Prof. M. P. Bush Laurel Prof. Goode Montgomery Ellisville and Miss Clara Hailey Mt. Olive. The effort aims to elevate local teaching, offers state licensing examination Aug 15–16, ends Aug 17 with a rally led by Hon. R. V. Fletcher.
Prof E B Ferris of McNeil Experiment Station invites farmers and friends to an excursion train from Meridian to McNeil on August 14 to tour the station and its crops. Visitors are urged to bring a well filled basket and spend the day observing soils fertilizers and cultivation methods showcased by Ferris who has led the station since 1894.
Laurel opens a new cotton exchange August first under J. P. Wright. Wright, formerly from Grenada, is praised for worth and bearing as Laurel welcomes the agency for daily cotton quotations via a Haywood, Vick & Clark wire. The venture aims to provide reliable market information and support for local merchants.
A Devoe & Co letter to N W Grant shares painter reports from M A Thomas in Lynchburg Raleigh and others on how many gallons Devoe were estimated and actually used for first jobs. Examples include 37 estimated 25 used and notes on efficiency and prior usage.
Hon. B. B. Eaton defeats Hon. G. Wood Magee for district attorney of the 13th Judicial district by at least 1250 votes. Eaton, age about 28, native of Smith county, is praised for integrity and service. He studied at Millsap's College, practiced law in Laurel since 1904, and was appointed by Gov. Vardaman to the new district post. The district includes Lawrence, Simpson, Scott, Smith, Jones, Covington, and Jeff Davis counties.
