Reports from Chicago on June 17 indicate Borah will preside over the convention with Hadley replaced as floor leader after Roosevelt arrangement. Mr. Will Davis of Summerland reported an act of vandalism near Laurel. A quarter mile of wire fence was damaged with wire cut and tracks found, suggesting a calculated attack to seek vengeance on Mr Moore, a Summerland resident known for peaceful conduct.
In New York on June 17 several officers of the Democratic state association left for Baltimore to urge Gaynor’s nomination for president. They plan to meet with arriving delegates and pledge instructed delegates as Gaynor’s second choice, while admitting the association’s activities are unauthorized by Mayor Gaynor.
Washington June 17 President Yalt vetoed the army appropriation bill and sent a message to Congress disapproving the provision that would oust Major General Wood from his office as chief of staff on March 4 next.
In Sandersville on Saturday night burglars entered multiple places including the home of Drageiat Eo Perkins and took $35 from Perkins belongings. The intruders were seen on the roof of a gallery and a frame near Williams was disturbed. Earlier a Hardee Brothers site reported a burglary.
From Santiago to Oriente province reports detail heavy losses for insurgent forces. General Estenez and General Lacoste killed. Admiral Usher confirms government belief the revolt weakens. In Antoma Chi’s area rebels threaten surrender urged by a harsh stance. About 150 rebels surrender in Oriente as morale sinks and a quick end to the revolt is anticipated.
A train bearing the Georgia delegation to the Republican convention derailed just outside Union Station in Chicago this morning. Several delegates were injured not seriously but enough to postpone the Georgia caucus until this afternoon.
Chicago March 17. Governor Hadley of Missouri led Roosevelt forces claiming Roosevelt supporters will elect the temporary chairman by a majority over forty two. Southern negroes will switch the nomination from Taft to Roosevelt.
Taft leaders meeting in Chicago after a morning conference said they were prepared for any parliamentary move by Roosevelt supporters. They denied charging Rosewater with visiting Roosevelt allies to seek a compromise.
Henry Taft of Cincinnati, brother of the president, arrived in Chicago and drew attention among delegates. He says the Taft family is not worried and that William Howard Taft will win out.
Mr. Carpenter, fined $25 for selling a quart of beer, says he did not promise to leave the city and no one expressed a desire for him to move. The Argus prints this correction to set the record straight. He noted possible business reasons to move, but not as mitigation of the sentence.
The strike expected to end today did not. The Barber Asphalt Company and American Smelting and Refining Company refused to compromise on wage offers. Workers faced bag and worm Scruges for drugs were noted in the report.
Nathan R Noble brother of the late Mayor Noble and respected citizen dies when a shotgun discharged into his left eye while cleaning the gun in the Kingston store on Thirteenth Street. The accident occurred in a small rear room. witnesses across the street heard a muffled report. Noble, 41, leaves a wife and two boys and was described as cheerful shortly before death. The inquest was deemed unnecessary as the event is ruled an accident. Surviving family includes parents, siblings, and several relatives across California and Arizona.
