Mule mill clerk assaulted by mob in Newton County

W. A. McAlpin, a mulatto railway mail clerk, left Laurel for his first run with high spirits. He returned badly bruised after being attacked by a mob of Newton County citizens at an outlying station. He was stripped and beaten amid allegations of an unlawful assault connected to racial tensions. Investigation to follow.
