A funeral at the Masonic Lodge recalls Murray Petersen a dreamer turned doer whose vision and determination built Round-Up Realty into a 47 million building empire in three years. He influenced money institutions and inspired a tight Petersen family–managed organization as he mapped plans for expansion and future growth.
A major brush fire in North Hollywood burned at least three homes as heat topped 100 degrees. A second blaze near Mulholland Drive and Beverly Glen threatened more than a dozen structures. Crews 125 strong used borate bombers and helicopters aiming for early containment amid smog alert and prior 1962 heat wave.
President Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard to enforce desegregation in three cities, ending Wallace's defiance. Nearly 1,500 white students protested at Birmingham's integrated high school while Huntsville and Tuskegee moved forward without incident. At Murphy High in Mobile the steps were peaceful amid a broader desegregation wave.

Ground fighting reported in Sierra Maestra and Sierra de Escambray with clashes at Arroyo Blanco where a camp was stormed. Casualties tally near 100 with 64 militiamen and six guerrillas killed. Camp commander Captain Abraham Menendez executed.
David Brophy, 28, and his three children survived a five day ordeal after a crash landing in the Uinta range in northern Utah. They fled the wreck site were without food until rescue on Sunday. The family had flown from Hastings Nebraska to Silverdale Washington when bad weather forced the crash. The boy Donald, seven, described their hunger after the rescue.
President Kennedy issued an executive order stopping the draft of married men aged 19 to 25, exempting about 340,000 husbands while eligible single men remain. Those already inducted must finish their terms, but married men remain draft proof unless an emergency arises.
Nevada gaming board reviews eight nonrestricted license applications including bids to buy the Mizpah Hotel Tonopah for 335000 by Esther Cohen and Philip Levine and Tonopah Club stake by Benjamin Ball. Other buyers include Gin Choy Jew at El Rio Club, and Charles Dungan at Sagebrush Bar Fallon.
Philip E. Lord pleaded guilty in federal court to attempting to extort money from a Phoenix woman after her husband was killed. Judge David Ling set sentencing for September 23. Lord faces up to 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He gave orders by telephone threatening death to her or her child if the money was not delivered.
