Massive Senate plan targets poverty with new jobs drive
A Senate subcommittee urged a $2 minimum hourly wage and a massive employment program to cut poverty within 10 to 20 years. The 100 page study of 18 months and 400 witnesses says 2.4 million jobs must be created in four years, with sustained growth and targeted support for the elderly and nonworking. 29.7 million Americans are poor by defined standards, including 12.5 million children, though 80 to 90 percent of poor adults under 65 can work.

Among 14.8 percent contacted, 60 percent were from three main areas south of Fremont and east of Main Street, with Boulder City yielding the largest single undecided segment. One third refused to ballot, possibly due to federal civil service employment. A nearby location north of Fremont and west of Main Streets also had undecided voters, while Henderson showed strong support for a former Alabama governor.
