Grand Ole Opry Marks Its Golden Anniversary
Nashville celebrates the Grand Ole Opry 50th year with a national telecast banquets and a large gathering led by Roy Acuff. The Opry, broadcast on WSM 50,000 watt station, has drawn millions weekly and produced legends like Acuff Tubb Robbins Jones and others. The program moved from the Ryman Auditorium to a new brick and glass facility and continues as the longest running radio show. Acuff recalls early days before the move and the vast rural audience that built the Opry into a symbol of country music.
