Ex-Record Head Calls Las Vegas Mecca for Unmarketed Talent
Clive Davis, former Columbia Records president, told UNLV students Las Vegas is a mecca for performers who do not sell records well and has no strong radio support for new releases. He praised songwriters and newer musicians while noting industry caution and his own tax evasion indictment. Davis led Columbia Records 1965 to 1973 and helped launch stars like Joplin, Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Diamond, Chicago. He urged artists to avoid publishers before joining record companies.
