Raleigh mayor Lightner loses bid for reelection

Clarence E. Lightner, Raleigh’s first black mayor, finishes third with about 30 percent of votes after a troubled year for his family. Jules J. Coggins leads with 10 201 votes and J Oliver Williams second with 7 542. both white, they meet in November. Lightner declines to comment.

Increased Fees Boost Clark County Law Library Funding

District Court judges recommendations led the Clark County Commission to raise filing fees from five dollars to an amount not specified. The law library, which ran a deficit of 21,494 dollars in 1974 75, is now a half million dollar county investment. The library warns that inadequate funding could end legal subscriptions and impair research. Estimated revenue based on a five dollar fee would leave a 41,139 dollar deficit in 1975 76.

Trucker Firm Issued Court Restraint In ICC Case

A federal judge entered a judgment restraining Jackson Equipment Co. from doing business as the ICC suit proceeds. Harold Herman Jackson and the firm face charges of interstate motor vehicle transportation without a certificate of public convenience and necessity. A settlement conference failed to yield terms. The ICC filed findings based on 40 bills of lading from 1973 to 1978.

Bomb Death Toll Doubles FBI Reports Shocking Rise

FBI data show eight month toll of 38 deaths and 229 injuries from bombing and 1,386 incidents in 1975 across the United States and Puerto Rico, sharply higher than 1974. August declined from last year with 3 deaths and 20 injuries. Property damage reached 22.8 million, driven by a 14 million incident. residences and offices were top targets.

United Airlines Seeks 3 Percent Fare Increase

United Airlines plans to file with the Civil Aeronautics Board for a 3 percent fare increase after being denied a 4.2 percent fuel surcharge. If approved, the hike would take effect November 15. The CAB has recently rejected several fare increase requests from major carriers.

Gun Death Ordered To Trial

A district court trial was ordered for 20 year old Trina Smith charged with manslaughter in the Sept 4 1974 shooting death of her husband Carl 19 at their Tam Drive home. Autopsy cited loss of blood from a back shot with a .22 pistol. Smith, free on bail, gave a statement to police claiming self defense after he began beating her.

New Child Care Center Approved By Commission

Clark County Commission narrowly approves Nevada Young American Homes project at Nellis Boulevard and Powell Avenue by a 4 to 3 vote to open a nursery for 20 children, with future expansion to 80. Neighbors protest traffic and density, 149 signatures filed against. Conditions require off street parking and fencing.

Resorts Get Rise Approval For Strip Expansions

Clark County commissioners approved expansions for two Las Vegas Strip hotels. The Stardust gains a 19 story 1 630 room addition raising height to 215 feet on a 25 8 acre lot with four months to finish offsite street improvements. Holiday Inn receives a 10 story 300 room expansion on a six acre site with no discussion.

Cesar Garcia 33 of 190 Win nick Ave was found guilty by a district court jury of selling 60 dollars worth of heroin to an undercover agent. The Feb 22 1973 sale occurred in Judge Thomas O'Donnell's courtroom. sentencing set for Nov 13.
