Hollywood police confirmed the death of Ramon Novarro a 69 year old former film idol found beaten in his Hollywood Hills residence. The assault prompted an investigation as detectives searched the scene for a motive and possible suspects.

In Newark Humphrey predicts a miracle win that will defy polls and land him the presidency. Speaking to about 3,000 workers in Harrison New Jersey he says he will beat Nixon with a victory that will rock the nation.
Harris Poll of 1,675 likely voters taken October 27 28 shows Nixon at 40 Humphrey 37 Wallace 16. The margin narrows with Humphrey gaining two points in two weeks and Wallace slipping outside the South. Regional results favor Nixon East 42 40 Midwest 45 39 West 45 37 Wallace leads South 34. Electoral college outcome remains uncertain with national trends unlikely to settle the race before election day.
Democrats praised President Johnson's halt to bombing North Vietnam while Republicans gave cautious approval. Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey called the move prudent and wise, saying it now appears to favor a cooling path in the war and a potential political recalibration.
Six search and rescue parties scoured Death Valley by air and ground for pilot Thomas Padratzik and passenger Karen Zick after an emergency desert landing. A Las Vegas sweater belonging to Padratzik was found about 2,000 feet from the crash site.
