Dr James I Mason resigned as Clark County schools chief amid a textbook contract dispute and withdrew early from Oakland schools superintendent election amid protests. Critics cited his Clark County integration policies and alleged bypass in the selection process.
Harvard biologist George Wald delivering a speech at MIT on March 4 electrified a 1200-strong audience as part of the March 4 movement. He linked student unease to perceived irrelevance in education and urged focus on deeper issues, drawing standing ovations and strong media reaction.
U S paratroopers abandon Hamburger Hill after costly fight. About 50 Americans killed and 300 wounded as 500 troops from the 101st Airborne pull back from the 3,000 foot peak that served as a North Vietnamese regimental HQ near the A Shau Valley near the Vietnam Laos border.
A Penn Central train fire in a Hudson River tunnel in New Jersey killed conductor William J. Thompson of Rahway and injured more than 130 people from smoke inhalation. Passengers fled the smoke through windows and catwalks to the New Jersey end as emergency crews treated hundreds at hospitals and on site.
UPI reports U S B52 bombers ranged along a 60 mile jungle stretch near the Cambodian border and dropped close to two million pounds of explosives on infiltration routes toward Saigon. Eight jet B52s carried out five waves northwest of the capital, each flight of about six planes releasing at least 60 000 pounds. The raids followed a clash in which Communist forces launched 30 new rocket or mortar attacks against allied posts and installations.
A SUN Task Force report details a closed session by trustees of Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital amid a rift between a board member and Dr Ralph Adams the administrator. Reports say veteran employees faced harassment firings and resignations with a union drive underway and a look into hospital purchasing procedures including a $58000 bed purchase from Borg Warner Corp by District Attorney George Franklin anticipated.
The Bonanza Hotel reopens in Las Vegas after 48 days of rapid remodeling by Levin Townsend Corp. Nathan Jacobson, president, vows a wild friendly venue as actor Dale Robertson and Pat Buttram headline the opening for 1,000 guests. Robertson performs twice nightly in the 500 seat Bonanza Opera House. Exterior work continues.
The SUN reports Dr. Adams was asked about directing the Hospital Research Development Institute which advises Borg-Warner. The debate over hospital policy could delay July’s planned shift from county ownership to a community non profit corporation. Local doctors sparked a revolution last year that led to Administrator Jack Staggs’s resignation. Adams was named from a list by Herman Smith Consultants of Chicago.
Las Vegas fire inspector testified that the December 27, 1967 blaze that half cremated Rose Mapel Azbill was an act of arson. Inspector Steve Hampton supported the state’s claim that lighter fluid started the fire in the murder trial of Sylvester J. Azbill.
UPI reports film and TV star Jeffrey Hunter died after a fall at his Van Nuys home. He was unconscious, underwent brain surgery, and coroner later cited blunt head trauma as the cause. Hunter, known for King of Kings and The Searchers, was 42.
