Navy Continues Thresher Probe at Sea Deep Search Ongoing
Closed hearings into the Thresher disaster continue this week in Portsmouth New Hampshire with six witnesses testifying behind closed doors. Captain Frank A Andrews leading the search said six objects found on the 8400 foot ocean floor will be examined next week to see if any are the hull. A 50 50 chance of locating the hull is noted as a yard by yard search proceeds. The Navy will scuttle the World War II submarine Toro near the Thresher site to study current effects on a sinking sub and will perform sonar and fathometer checks. The Toro is towed from Philadelphia and is due in port today. In Munich Germany restauranteur Rudi Wiegand requires derby hat wearing women to remove hats when dining, saying equality demands it.
