Working Cabbie Stabbed Amid Taxi Strike Shutdown
Thousands of visitors during the World’s Fair faced a taxi shortage as a drivers strike cut 12 000 cabs from New York streets. Violence and vandalism accompanied the walkout, with four assaults on cabbies in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Police increased patrols as owners stored idle cars and riders shifted to buses and subways. The strike, tied to union recognition efforts, followed a citywide vote on June 14 and a federal injunction delaying ballot counting.

Deadly planning ends life in helmet rig device
Aubrey Russell, 29, formerly of San Francisco, died from a 22 caliber gunshot wound to the head after a self constructed Rube Goldberg style setup in a Venice hotel room. A helmet with a rifle, a chair, and a pulley's clothes line triggered the shot as water filled a bucket, pulling the trigger while he slept. The incident followed a separate Senate debate on a $650 million health bill where Ed Long's amendment was defeated 55 to 36 amid sharp exchanges between Dirksen and Yarborough before passage of the bill.
