Vatican birth control report faces deep split among cardinals
The papal commission on birth control ends three years of debate and presents Pope Paul VI with a report showing strong divergence. The inner cabinet, led by Alfredo Cardinal Ottaviani, could not reach agreement on changes, with support for liberalization from doctors and sociologists but opposition from bishops. The oral pill debate centers on whether it could be allowed to regulate the cycle, similar to rhythm. The Pope will decide, likely this fall, after briefing from Heenan and other members.

Blitz Force Again Geared To Avert Racial Trouble
In Cleveland, Ohio, police maintained maximum surveillance on the East Side after two nights of unrest. Two mobile command posts, foot patrols, a helicopter with searchlight, cruisers, ambulances, mounted units and motorcycle squads reinforced efforts to prevent violence. About 200 youths—Black and white—caused window-breaking, looting and small fires during a four hour flare up. Officials said rapid action by special task force officers helped avert a repeat of Thursday’s shooting of a 10 year old Black boy. Temperature neared 90 degrees for the fourth day.
