American Investment Holds Steady in South Africa Despite Unrest
More than 300 American subsidiaries in South Africa averaged 18 percent margins last year. Total American investment stands around 1.5 billion dollars, less than 15 percent of foreign investment and 1.2 percent of Americans’ abroad holdings. Banks say repatriation is easy, profits reinvested, and the local market supported by rich resources, with key players like Caltex, Kennecott, Ford, GM, and Citibank expanding despite political risk.
