Fire at LeClerc Institution Prison Triggers Military Aid
Rioting inmates set fire to between 10 and 15 buildings inside a half mile square compound at the LeClerc Institution north of Montreal. Mayor Rudolphe Lavoie called in the Army as hundreds of police failed to control the scene. Fire destroyed a three story building housing the library and clinic while water pressure hampered suppression. The prison houses 1000 to 1200 long term prisoners and the riot appears to have involved most inmates, with stealth units surrounding the rear and power cut in the area. The LeClerc Institution section remained uninvolved.
