Renato Penteriani a 52 year old Rome poultry and egg shop owner was seized by three masked men armed with submachine guns as he left his home to work. He struggled but was forced into a waiting car and driven away at high speed. Police said four others kidnapped by the same group remain missing.
In the four days before national elections the Christian Democrats lead the Communists 34.0 to 32.9 percent with Liberties and Socialists also rising. Shig Katayama, head of I D Corp, says police tailed him and tapped his phones after he admitted issuing blank receipts to Lockheed Aircraft Corp. to conceal $12 million in Japanese payments. He claims he was paid $75 000 for the receipts and that prosecutors trace the funds to cover payments in Japan.
