Bloody assault on Berchtegade base near A Shau Valley

North Vietnamese commandos stormed the Berchtegade base of the 101st Airborne in the A Shau Valley, killing 11 Americans and wounding 42 paratroopers. U.S. airpower and carrier jets supported a multi-hour defense while at least 31 NVA bodies were counted. Helicopters were shot down and more units reported wounded.

Father’s Day tribute amid Cairo violence at eve of new police chief

In Cairo Illinois sniper fire and firebombs struck two white residents and a restaurant owner’s car on the eve of William Petersen’s arrival as police chief. No injuries reported, damage minor, arrests none. gunfire also near Pyramid Courts housing. Police note two shotgun blasts hit Leon Albritton’s car but left him unharmed.

Soviet China border talks loom as clashes persist

The Soviet Union blamed Communist China for border clashes and proposed talks with Peking officials to discuss minor border adjustments.
