Midwest Floods Hit Towns as Clouds Burst Across Corn Belt

Clouds burst over the Corn Belt sending flash floods through Hawarden Iowa to Beresford South Carolina and submerging fields. A Springfield Missouri man vanished in Reed Springs as floodwaters surged into the area. Missouri reports heavy damage to 20 homes and 20 businesses with losses over a million dollars. Snow and cold gripped Montana as arctic air pushed south.

Red Wall Falls: Berlin Severs East West Ties

In Berlin the Communist border closed on Monday as the East German West Berlin travel deal expired. Families said tearful goodbyes at the crossings while 70,000 West Berliners passed through five checkpoints. The Pentecost visit period ended with 600,000 people touring across the wall.

The Harris Survey shows Americans face many psychological worries in a prosperous society. Over 70 percent feel they waste time watching television and rarely read or attend church enough. One third admit guilt over pushing ahead at work, 47 percent fear drinking too much, and 19 percent acknowledge near‑out‑of‑control drinking.

Judy Garland Hospitalized in Los Angeles

Singer Judy Garland, 42, is under treatment at UCLA Medical Center for an emotional upset after an allergic reaction to a drug. She was hospitalized from her home Saturday night, with a fever and rash noted by hospital staff. Nevada Southern Graduation Today

Nevada Southern University holds its second annual commencement for 58 graduates at 10 a.m. in the Las Vegas campus gym. Dr. Malcolm A. Love will deliver the address and receive an honorary doctor of laws, with Archie C. Grant earning the Distinguished Nevadan award. The Nevada Centennial Medallion goes to the top four year scholastic student, and several university officials prepare degrees and civic rites. The public is invited to attend.
