Peace Parley imperiled By Saigon Raids

United States warned North Vietnam that continued Communist terror attacks on Saigon could jeopardize Paris talks. Averell Harriman accused Hanoi and the Viet Cong of mass civilian shellings in Saigon and warned of possible consequences for the talks as he pressed for restraint and warned of firm action if troops and allies’ lives are at stake. Xuan Thuy rejected the charges, asserting the strikes targeted strategic sites. No progress was reported after the eighth session of negotiations.

Proler and Police Fire At Nevada Governor Home

In Carson City early yesterday a prowler exchanged gunfire with police at the Nevada governor Paul Laxalt's mansion. No one was hurt. Guards were posted as the Laxalt family, including six children, stayed in the grounds and Gail, the oldest daughter, was allowed to go to downtown work.

Landmark Tower Owner Has Charges Dismissed

Landmark Tower owner Frank Caroll also known as Frank Caracciolo, aged 49, had assault and battery charges dismissed by District Attorney George Franklin Jr. after a complaint by interior decorator Leonard England alleging an assault at the shuttered hotel in April. Franklin said the dismissal occurred on condition Caroll not renew his licensing bid and noted no court action response was determined by late yesterday.

Sirhan Sirhan Studies Occultism in Jail as Court Fight Looms

In Los Angeles Sirhan B. Sirhan awaiting trial for the Kennedy assassination reportedly pores over occultism books in his guarded cell. He plans to enter a plea on June 2 in Judge Arthur L. Alarcon's court and seeks two high profile lawyers rather than the court appointed public defender. ACLU attorney A. L. Wirin said several attorneys have offered to serve pro bono but named none. He noted Sirhan does not want Melvin Belli or F. Lee Bailey as his lawyers.

Convicts Riot in Atlanta Prison After Siege Ends

A 27 hour siege at Atlanta Federal Penitentiary ended with 21 hostages freed and weapons tossed from a window after convicts surrendered. FBI arrested Arlene Granito, 25, of Newark, N J, for smuggling two pistols, ammunition and hacksaw blades into the maximum security facility. Granito claimed to be the girlfriend of Ralph Lepiscopo, 25, jailed for 20 years for bank robbery, while other participants included Ivan Neighbors, 25, with 120 year sentence, Robert Gorman, 30 years, and Frederick Leister Jr., 34 years, all for serious crimes.

Three Men Die In Light Plane Crash In Newfoundland Pa

A private single engine plane crashed in heavy fog and rain on a wooded mountain near Newfoundland Pennsylvania, killing three men identified as Charles Sandlin 41 of Toledo Ohio a Toledo upholstering executive Lee Walter Whaley 37 of Toledo and the pilot William Franko. The crash occurred late in the afternoon.
