Las Vegas Sinking Forces New Groundwater Study
Desert Research Institute geologists led by Dr. George B. Maxey study land subsidence in the Lake Mead Las Vegas region. They note a regional tilt toward the basin with a local dimple, driven by groundwater pumping and artesian pressure changes. Data show subsidence rising from 3 inches in early periods to accelerating rates since 1940.
