Nixon and Thieu outline a 25 000 troop withdrawal from Vietnam starting in 30 days and ending by August. They reject a coalition government, emphasize self determination, and pledge further withdrawals if conditions permit. The talks aim to pressure Hanoi and the Paris talks while maintaining Saigon's independence.
Gus Hall, general secretary of the American Communist Party, hailed the Moscow world conference as an unqualified success. He denounced President Nixon Chief Justice-designate Warren Burger and Herbert Marcuse during a news conference with 300 reporters. Hall predicted consolidation of the world movement and said Nixon could not stop the radical upsurge in the United States.
Nellis AFB airman Louis G. Buzzell 20 of Lynn, Maine drowned in Lake Mead yesterday afternoon while attempting to swim a 35 yard wide Government Wash channel. Fellow airman John W. Laney tried to rescue him and nearly went under. Buzzell's body was recovered about 30 feet from shore by rangers.
A flash fire destroyed a single story home in South Parkersburg, killing Mr. and Mrs. Bailey and ten of their children. Two teens, Susan and Roger, and grandfather Obie Bailey escaped. the elder was hospitalized for shock. Three others survived. The incident occurred early yesterday, authorities said.
A 19 year old motorcyclist from Nellis Air Force Base suffered severe skull fractures after losing control on Nellis Boulevard. In a separate Tonopah Highway crash in Lake Havasu City six youths were seriously injured as their car veered off the road due to likely fatigue.

In a CBS Face the Nation interview, Nelson Rockefeller decries the Alliance for Progress as overpromised and underdeveloped, saying red tape stalls Latin American aid and road projects. He notes widespread bureaucratic inertia and warns against canceling future trips, citing six years of delays in road planning due to U.S. requirements.
Harris survey shows Nixon leading Kennedy 46 to 37 percent among likely voters with Wallace at 11 percent and 6 percent undecided. Among all eligible voters Nixon leads 41 to 40 over Kennedy, Wallace at 10 percent. Wallace voters largely back Nixon if Wallace were not running.
Robert Taylor leading man of the 1930s to 1950s died of cancer at St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica at age 17. He had lung surgery last October and had been a long-time smoker. His wife Ursula Thiess and doctors were at his side as cancer proved terminal.
