A single engine private plane bound for Las Vegas from Salt Lake City with five people aboard was found late in the afternoon abandoned in the Southern Utah desert. The Defense Department proposes a one mile deep hole to bury a post attack command control center for emergency use in a nuclear holocaust. Estimated cost exceeds 100 million dollars. The House approved a 1.6 billion annual military construct program as debate continued.
President Kennedy announced a $1 billion plan to develop a private sector built supersonic airliner with federal funds, aiming to fly New York to Europe in under three hours. The inter agency panel led by Vice President Johnson recommends the design and test program as a long term national project.

TEHRAN Iran UPI Thousands of fanatical Moslems stormed through Tehran to overthrow the Shah's government but loyal troops repelled them with tank and machinegun fire. Martial law was declared and a ruthless suppression followed daylong fighting in the capital leaving the city in flames. Premier Assadollah Alam said about 20 killed and injured and 30 arrested with ongoing gunfire amid rubble. Similar unrest hit other cities as authorities battled to restore order.
Charles J. Triplett editor and publisher of the Wells Progress died in Twin Falls Idaho at 59 after six weeks in hospital. A Nevadan born Sept. 15 1903 he began publishing in 1940 and led Nevada press associations. Survived by his widow Ola Fuller married in 1925.
Thousands of mourners in Vatican City joined a solemn procession for Pope John XXIII. The crowds included Rome’s ordinary citizens, peasants, nobles, laborers, professionals, and postal workers, all paying final respects as the pontiff’s body lay in state.
