Unit Award honors park staff for flood search efforts
Seventy nine National Park Service employees received the Unit Award for Excellence of Service for actions beyond duty in the search and recovery of flash flood victims and property after the Eldorado Canyon flood on Lake Mead in September and October 1974. The award, signed by Interior Secretary Thomas S. Kleppe, honors long hours and hazardous work by LMNRA staff and volunteers in one of the nation’s worst park disasters. Acting Superintendent Gary E. Bunney warns of further flash floods after rainstorms and urges travelers to avoid washes and drainage channels in remote areas.
