In Manaus Brazil thousands of Amazon prospectors work as near slaves mining gold for smuggling to the United States. Brazilian lawmakers and an escaped miner describe brutal conditions. Joao Marinho recalls being paid a gram and a half daily while under harsh control.
Brazilian reporter Marinho says thousands flee to the Paraguari River basin in Amazonas where workers live in semislavery under armed guards. They are paid in gold but kept poor by food, liquor, and high costs. some escapees are killed. Smuggling, routed via Para and Guyana to the United States, involves three tons of gold.
