The Sporting News reports Milwaukee will move its National League franchise to Atlanta at season's end. Atlanta officials, led by Arthur Montgomery, say a major league team has commitment and stadium plans are underway. Also noted is Atlanta's push to relocate the St. Louis Cardinals, with Bidwell brothers undecided on lease. Lt Gov Paul Laxalt to announce Senate candidacy in Nevada. Cannon seeks re election and other Republicans have entered the race.
Washington UPI reports Congress passed the civil rights bill and President Johnson signed it into law. He urged all Americans to join in the effort to bring justice and hope and peace to the nation. The measure grew from the Negro protest movement against discrimination and completes its congressional journey.
Plumbers Local 525 sends 103 workers back to the Nevada Test Site after a seven day strike. Union business agent Dave McGinty says the international union was asked by General President Peter Schoemann to return the men "for the moment" while the Joint Labor Board of the AFL-CIO orders erections of 19 tanks by Reynolds Electric and Engineering Co.
Paradise Valley Country Club president Lloyd Whaley faces fraud and mismanagement charges in an answer and cross claims filed in Clark County District Court. Greenspun counters Whaley’s claims over default on a 1960 note for 1 995 000 and disputes about land interests, development costs, and loans tied to the club’s golf course and facilities.
Ned Turner of the State Gaming Control Board says accepting Harolds Club box seats for a San Francisco opening day game was not improper. He notes he paid his own way, was on leave, and would not let the favor influence his gaming decisions. Turner asserts he and fellow board members strive for integrity in Nevada's gambling oversight.
Fidel Castro voiced bitter personal pain over Juana Castro's defection to Mexico during a reception at the Canadian Embassy. He also warned the United States he is gradually gaining means to halt U S reconnaissance flights over Cuba, saying unnamed editors at the Mexican embassy altered his sister's charges.
Rep. Walter Baring of Nevada voted no as the House approved the long-pending civil rights bill by 289 to 126. Support came from 153 Democrats and 136 Republicans, while 91 Democrats and 35 Republicans opposed.
The House approved the compromise version by 289 to 126, stamping approval after the Senate had passed it on June 19. The move came one year and two weeks after President Kennedy sent the measure to Congress, with five hours remaining in the day.
