Inauguration Fest Opens Johnson Gala With A-List Stars
The 1965 Gala at Washington's National Guard Armory kicked off three days of inaugural events for President Lyndon B. Johnson. About 11,000 guests, including 6,000 major party contributors, heard performances by Harry Belafonte, Bobby Darin who wrote The Great Society, and stars such as Carol Channing, Julie Andrews, Rudolf Nureyev, and Woody Allen. Johnson and Mrs. Johnson attended multiple dinners and a 7,000 strong reception at the National Gallery of Art as cold weather and snow contrasted with festive displays inside the armory.
