A UPI report says the Major Offense Bureau MOB cut supermarket holdups in the Bronx from 30 per month to under five. The fast track unit disposes cases in 97 days on average and shows a 96 percent conviction rate with 94 percent jail terms.
The Rev Bruce Edwards, pastor of President Carter's hometown church in Plains Georgia, resigned during a special conference after a dispute over his support for integrating the church. Edwards said a faction within the congregation had not accepted his views and that he left despite a motion to not accept his resignation. The meeting followed morning worship and focused on debt clearance.
California Highway Patrol reports ongoing inquiry into whether the Palestine Liberation Organization received part of funds allegedly stolen from U S insurance companies. Lt. Glenn Sewell says money is leaving the country and that investigators have found insured vehicles stolen in California later sold in the Middle East for about forty thousand dollars each. The link to the PLO remains unconfirmed.
Interior Secretary Andrus said he would recommend a national drought relief coordinator for the West. Governor Lamm urged Jack Watson, current presidential assistant, for the post as governors seek improved federal service delivery and early disaster payments amid potential farm foreclosures and water cuts.
Kampala reports say the families requested secret funerals for Archbishop Janani Luwum and two ministers, but London Times and Nairobi memorials say the men were murdered. Amin claims they died in a car accident during an alleged coup pursuit. International alarm grows as Uganda cuts communications.
