Joe Conforte, famed for Nevada's entry into the vice world, seeks a Reno bus franchise. The former extortion convict, known for Triangle Ranch and Mustang operations, faces criticism from the Black Student Union over alleged racist policies. He defends himself as an equal opportunity employer while eyeing expansion.

Michael Dean Ubben 21 waived extradition to Iowa after authorities said his wife Sandra Ubben was slain in Iowa. Ubben was arrested in Las Vegas after the body was found and faces murder charges in Iowa with earlier Illinois aggravated kidnapping charges dropped.
Gov. Paul Laxalt will not call a special legislative session over bond problems unless alternate financing methods fail. During a Las Vegas visit he met with chamber directors and private citizens discussing bond interest ceilings and inflation fears. He warned that even with higher ceilings or a tie to a national index, a solution may still be elusive.
Las Vegas resident Benny Harris escaped a 7 a.m. fire at his three bedroom home on Monroe Avenue. A second blaze at 1 p.m. at 5212 Morendo Drive left a 34 year old child on the front lawn safe after the home’s trash can fire, with Mrs. Alita Cargill away for a doctor’s visit.
Harold A. McCoy 42 of Las Vegas was cleared after charges of manslaughter in the 1969 death of Corina Cunningham were dismissed at prosecutors request. Cunningham was struck while crossing Sahara Avenue at Beverly Way, with the case previously hinging on alleged drunken driving.
A severe winter storm creeps across the East and Midwest with freezing temperatures in Dixie. New York City reports a 26-vehicle pileup on Selt Parkway amid ice, hundreds of minor crashes, and transit delays. Flights between New York and Chicago face cancellations as LaGuardia closes briefly. Minnesota visibility drops to zero in Wilmar due to blowing snow.
