About 650 jobs will be eliminated at the Nevada Test Site of the Atomic Energy Commission by June 1, a spokesman said. The President's budget message dampens hopes for a rebound next fiscal year, with Reynolds the contractor most affected and other contractors seeing only small losses.

In Los Angeles UPI report a Las Vegas developer Maurice H Friedman and gambler Manuel Ricky Jacobs were each sentenced to three years for conspiring to obtain secret Grand Jury transcripts. Sentences run concurrently with prior Friars Club card cheating convictions. Both appealed those convictions from the 1968 trial.
President Nixon asked Congress to appropriate 23.2 million dollars for Nevada water resources next year, including 16.5 million for the Southern Nevada Water Project. If approved, total project funds would be 18 million due to 1.5 million carried from the current year. Additional allocations cover Martins Creek Reservoir construction, flood control studies, and preconstruction work for Marble Bluff dam Pyramid Lake fishway and Stillwater wildlife area improvements.
Mrs Gwen Kopechne 61 was treated and later released from Monroe County General Hospital after an SUV driven by her husband Joseph 66 swerved to avoid a deer on Route 80 west of East Stroudsburg. She remained admitted for observation with satisfactory condition reported.
Washington reports the proposed defense budget will cut about 600,000 defense industry jobs by the end of fiscal 1971. Pentagon officials say several U.S. military bases may close and Vietnam War spending reductions are not disclosed. A high official noted 640,000 prime contract jobs targeted for reduction in the current and next fiscal year.
President Nixon asked Congress to approve a budget raising about 2.2 billion in revenues. The plan, praised by Republicans and criticized by Democrats, would lift Social Security taxes user taxes and postal rates and extend excise taxes to curb inflation and fund a 313 billion surplus. Senator Bennett estimated the cost at 11 dollars per person nationwide. Mansfield urged possible cuts in military spending to meet domestic needs.
The administration seeks a total federal crime fight budget of 1 billion for the new fiscal year, with 985 million to the Justice Department to aid local police, target mob bosses, and curb illegal drugs. Assistant Attorney General Will R. Wilson says more money won’t help without efficiency, as funds are mainly slated for state and local enforcement.
