A local column warns of growing crime in Las Vegas as downtown beautification continues and the Strip expands. It cites petty theft, robbery, prostitution and fears for the economy and family safety, urging alarm as immorality threatens jobs and public order.
Turkish journalist Goksin Sipahioglu recounts his daring under cover journey into Cuba during the blockade. He describes mingling with Cuban people while posing as a Turkish sailor and escaping danger in a first person account for the SUN.
Pakistan and India closed the first round of Kashmir negotiations in a spirit of cordiality and set a resumption in New Delhi on January 16. Leaders Z A Bhutto and S S Bhagat Singh issued a joint communique praising the talks.
The National Safety Council projected a record toll for the 102 hour New Year holiday period. Estimates ranged from 420 to 480 fatalities by Tuesday midnight as millions traveled the highways. At 3 30 a m ST 9 hours into the period eight deaths were counted by United Press International. The prior four day record was 409 in 1956 and 137 fatalities occurred during the prior three day holiday. Safety officials forecast adverse weather in many areas.
A 600 ton ship believed to be a Dutch coaster capsized in a 60 mile per hour gale off Land's End near Penzance England. Coastguards said there was very little hope of saving anyone aboard.
In Galveston a banana boat unload under heavy police and Texas Ranger presence as independents clash with ILA amid a waterfront dispute. No violence reported during the latest unload though an independent worker was shot in the foot Thursday night.
Francia Saran of Boulder City submitted a wild yarn about a mile deep Grand Canyon of the Colorado in Arizona. The Liars Club of Burlington Wisconsin announced the 1962 national championship lie winner as Walter Lewis of Williamsport Ohio for a drought tale.
Only two days remain to enter the Las Vegas SUN Fabulous 20 000 Chain Game. Entries must reach the SUN office at 900 South Main Street by 5 p.m. Monday December 31 1962 or be postmarked by midnight that date. Two hundred seventy prizes include a 1963 Rambier and a 11 day cruise to Acapulco.
Federal troops chased about 400 guerrillas into mountains near the Haitian border after five self-styled Messiahs led thousands in a bloody uprising that killed more than 30. Troops moved in by plane to Palma Soria as light artillery and armor converged on the area amid claims the rebellion was quelled.
United Nations forces seize Elisabethville and pursue Katanga troops into the bush. Jets strike the Kolwezi air base while the UN takes control of Katanga’s National Bank, potentially affecting Tshombe’s secession funding. Tshombe fled the presidential palace to Kipushi after the assault.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk lauded Indian Brigadier Reginald Noronha and other UN commanders for gallantry and wit in recovering a UN helicopter forced down on a Katanga golf course. The praise followed a Christmas Eve showdown exposing a Katanga fraud and a telegram sent in Rusk’s name to UN Secretary General Thant.
George Beebe of Salt Lake City pleaded guilty to robbery and received a five to seven year term. He entered the Western Sportsman Store, displayed a gun, forced owner George Wallace to surrender $68.38, and was arrested within an hour.
President Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy addressed more than 1,200 Cuban exiles in khaki uniforms at the Miami Orange Bowl stadium. The First Lady spoke in Spanish and the crowd cheered as Kennedy reviewed the ranks, with cries of Viva Kennedy and Guerrilla wars echoing through the one hour and 20 minute ceremony. A Cuban commander embraced Kennedy, and others urged him to lead in the fight for freedom.
A crude dynamite stick with a sash cord fuse was found near the Orange Bowl days before President Kennedy’s planned speech. Police dismissed it as a prank, noting the device had no regular fuse or cap and featured a makeshift cord fuse.
A French four engined airliner carrying 28 people vanished over Corsica between Bastia and Ajaccio. Local villagers reported hearing an explosion while airline sources said 25 passengers and three crew were aboard including Bastia basketball club players and supporters. The plane was en route from Bastia to Nice.
